Horror Dream Diary: The Man In The Chair

This nightmare is one of the most frightening that I’ve ever had. I dreamt that I awoke in the middle of the night to find that I had disturbing visitor to my bedroom. The next morning it actually took me a while to get my head around the whole thing because it was difficult to work out if it was dream or reality. You could say it was a “dream within a dream”. I actually had this one in 1996 when I was an undergraduate, and I always meant to write it down, so finally here it is…

When I awoke in the dream the house was dead silent and the room was drenched with moonlight that came in through partially drawn curtains. The window was open and a gentle breeze fluttered the curtains. My bed was in a corner and I lay facing the wall. As I turned over and reached for my spectacles I saw that somebody was sitting at my desk. All I could see was a pale bald head above the back of the chair.

I sprang for the bedroom door. It was jammed but I got it open without too much difficulty. On the landing I switched the lights on and calmed down before returning to my bedroom. The chair was empty so I put it down to being a bad dream.

I closed the window and went back to bed. Later that night I awoke a second time. The window was once again open. I looked over at the desk and saw the same bald head. I froze and stared at it noticing that it was embossed with a thick network of pulsing veins.

My bedroom door was jammed solid and opening it required all my physical strength. I glanced back at the desk and saw the chair slowly turning towards me. I got out of the room before I saw the face.

Horror Dream Drary: The Haunted Apartment

I was living in a Victorian mansion that had been divided up into individual apartments. My apartment looked out onto beautiful gardens.

Soon after moving in I realised that the apartment was haunted, and it became worse over the space of a few weeks. The ghosts were three black servants – a man, a woman and a young girl in her early 20s (possibly their daughter). The man and woman were both in their 50s, and were extremely menacing characters. The man was particularly frightening. He had deformed hands and I would often turn around to find that he’d been standing behind me, glaring at me.

The hauntings started off pretty low-key – Just a fleeting glimpse of one of them in a mirror, but when I turned around they would be gone. It wasn’t long before they were still be there when I turned around, fading away seconds later. Soon they were around pretty much all the time, and I decided to try to exorcise them, which was very difficult at first because they mocked me as I read prayers. I persisted and gradually the hauntings got less and less until I stopped seeing them.

Horror Dream Diary: My Gran's Remains.

My grandmother died in 2000, which is obviously plenty of time for me to come to terms with her passing, but strangely I have had two nightmares recently that featured her. Both were within 3 months of each other, and both featured people desecrating her remains. This is not exactly a pleasant thing to dream about, and originally I decided that there was no way I would write down something so disturbing, but after a while I recognised that the dreams had a slightly comic element to them that takes the sting out of them …so here we are with my macabre (but slightly silly) tale of “My Gran’s Remains”.

In the first dream I stood in the aisle of a church facing the altar. In front of me was my grandmother’s coffin. It was on a long, high table that raised it up to shoulder height. A man stood at the side of the coffin. He was dressed in a black suit and was leering at me. His eyes gleamed with wickedness. He rubbed his hands together in an extravagant way like a magician would before performing a trick. He then lifted the coffin lid slightly and reached inside with his whole arm.

He heaved on something large that was inside the coffin, and in one motion pulled out my grandmother, but minus her insides. The man had basically pulled out a Gran “body-suit” somehow leaving her bones and internal organs inside the coffin. The nearest thing I can think of that resembled this is that trick where someone yanks a tablecloth from a table leaving the crockery intact on the tabletop. This was a grotesque parody of that stunt, with my Gran’s bones being the crockery and her outer “body-suit” being the tablecloth.

I don’t know how the man did this but I found this scene utterly vile. He stood there laughing at me while my boneless grandmother flopped limply around his feet. When I woke up I felt quite sickened at what I dreamed about.

I had a second, similar dream around one month ago. Once again I was in the church from the previous dream, but this time I stood facing a wall. It had been crudely smashed open to reveal an urn that stood within the wall cavity. Somehow I knew that it contained the cremated remains of my grandmother (this is strange because I was fully aware in the dream she had actually been buried in real life).

My mother breezed into the church and tipped the urn upside down, pouring out some of the ashes into the wall cavity. She scooped some up using a small gardening spade and shovelled it into a small plastic bag. I asked her what the hell she was doing, and she explained that some of my Gran’s ashes were needed over at the hospital. Apparently “the hospital” had a collection of ornaments and semi-precious stones that they liked to display, and they favoured displaying them on a bed of somebody’s cremated ashes (apparently the colour of the ash complimented the display items perfectly). For some reason the hospital occasionally needed to renew the ashes, and this time it was my mother’s turn to get hold of some. Interestingly, when my mother explained all this to me, her tone was one of nonchalance, as if what she was doing was simply just a normal everyday occurrence. She did not seem to understand why I found her actions strange, and she found it odd that I thought she was doing something unusual.

My mother breezed back out of the church with a plastic bag containing some of my Gran’s ashes, and I turned back to look at the urn feeling very confused.

Horror Dream Diary: The Grey Man

Recently my brother told me something disturbing. He described how he had seen a ghost in my parents’ house some 8 or 9 years ago. Why he had not told me sooner I don’t know. I have always felt slightly uneasy in the upstairs rooms of that house – there is something unusual about the atmosphere - and now that I know that the place is haunted everything makes sense. It’s not a particularly old house. It was built in the early ‘70s, but in my opinion that’s more than enough time for a soul to make its mark.

What he described to me was quite unusual, and not at all like any ghost stories that I’ve heard before. He was having a sleepless night in the back bedroom (a twin room), and out of frustration shoved the duvet aside. With the duvet out of the way he could see that an elderly man was kneeling on the floor between the beds. He had grey hair and was bent over so much that his forehead was almost touching the carpet. The man held his head in his hands, his knuckles clenched around the back of his head. The position that the man was in was almost like a brace position as if an earthquake or bombing raid was happening. Despite this, my brother sensed that there was something deeply tragic about the man and that he was in this unusual position because he was experiencing some grave despair.

Terrified, and realising that he was seeing something supernatural, my brother covered himself back up with the duvet. A few minutes later he dared to take another look, but the old man was still there, frozen in the same position as before. Somehow he managed to get off to sleep and by morning the apparition had thankfully gone.

I mention all this because the other day I had a nightmare featuring the same ghost which went something like this…

For some reason I had taken up residence in the upstairs of my parents’ house. The house was disturbingly empty, as if nobody lived there anymore. I was alone in the house and it was night. The place was really creepy and inexplicable things would happen – electrical appliances would spring to life by themselves, and the light cord in the bathroom would often start swinging, clacking rhythmically against the tiles.

I heard the noise from the light cord and went to check it out. I passed the open door of the back bedroom where my brother had seen the ghost. Inside the room the electric light crackled dangerously, and a TV in the corner hissed menacingly at me. I stood at the threshold of the room and watched as the same elderly man that my brother has seen gradually materialised in the middle of the room. Sometimes he partially appeared then faded away, but once or twice he appeared to be completely solid. He seemed animated as if talking and gesturing to an invisible person who was also in the room. I could hear what he was saying. It was mostly gibberish – the ramblings of a madman, but he coherently said two or three sentences. I distinctively heard him say that there were “problems in Arkansas”.

I tried to attract the old man’s attention. “Hey” I shouted, but he was not aware of me. I tried again more loudly and he immediately stopped talking to his invisible partner. Slowly and silently the man turned around and looked into my eyes.

“What is your name?” I asked.

He told me.

I wish I remembered what it was when I woke up.

Horror Dream Diary: The Human Abattoir

Usually my nightmares are frightening because of they contain a supernatural aspect. This one is instead a good old fashioned gore-fest with plenty of blood and guts. This time there’s no poncing about in haunted houses. This nightmare goes straight for the jugular (almost quite literally)…

I dreamt that I was on a hiking/camping trip with a friend (I have no idea who) somewhere in the English countryside. We were lost and in the middle of a great wilderness. We came across a ramshackle collection of small buildings and outhouses that looked industrial, like a small factory or a farm.

The unusual thing about the place was that there were no roads leading up to it. It also appeared completely deserted. The location was strange – very remote, and built into a depression in the landscape making it completely invisible from miles around.

We were curious and decided to investigate further. We circled the buildings from a distance so that we could approach discretely from the rear.

We found a long single storey brick outhouse with a corrugated metal roof. It had a pair of heavy steel doors, one of which was slightly ajar. I pulled it open and stepped inside. My friend waited inside.

I stood at the end of a long room. Rows of metal benches stretched the length of the room. The place was deserted and eerily silent. Clearly it hadn’t been unused for some time. The benches were strewn with old and dirty knives, cleavers and saws. Looking down I noticed long drainage channels cut into the concrete floor that bore the signs of dark, encrusted blood. There was a stench of death and decaying flesh.

To my left were pair of large swing doors made from a heavy yellowish translucent plastic sheeting. I pushed my way through and found myself in a room of horrors. Rows of stripped human carcasses hung from meat hooks. The ones closest to me were freshly skinned, their naked muscles and tendons glistening. Those towards the back of the room were almost unrecognisably human due to their advanced state of decomposition. Some had been disembowelled, their bellies cavernous. Others had been partially stripped of flesh or dismembered. To my right was a low doorway. I stooped to enter and found myself into a smaller room. There was a stainless steel table in the centre. On it were smaller cuts of flesh, expertly butchered. Shelves containing neatly packaged portions of human meat lined the room.

It was clear that this was work-in-progress, and that the place wasn’t as deserted as I’d originally thought. Panicking, I retreated to the meat-hook room and just as I began to heave myself through the plastic doors I was violently seized from behind. Somebody with immense strength lifted me clear of the ground, pulling me backward. I was manoeuvred into place next to a carcass. I was lifted a little higher, back a bit and then I was released. I heard a crunch and felt a searing pain as the unseen butcher hung me on a meat hook from the back of my neck.

I was alone in the room, my body swinging gently from the hook. I distantly heard sounds of metal on metal. I knew my spinal cord had been severed. I was conscious, but completely lifeless from the neck down.

That’s about all I can remember. I wonder what happened to my friend.

Horror dream diary: A House without Windows

I was in a leafy suburb - a wealthy area with large detached houses with substantial grounds. The house I stood before was square and imposing. It was built from a sandy coloured stone and its overgrown grounds were encircled by gnarled wrought iron fencing. It was early evening and the sun was low, casting long shadows. Stray branches and overgrown bushes were sillhouetted against the golden sky.

The unusual thing obout the building was that it had no windows. This made it look like a mausoleum. There were large depressions in the walls where windows should have been. The surrounding stonework was intricately decorated with engravings and carvings of snakes. My instincts told me that I should leave, but there was a warmth and beauty that drew me in.

The next thing I knew I was standing inside the house. It was silent and gloomy, and the walls were oak panelled. I was in the main hallway at the bottom of a grand staircase that led up to darkness. Corridors at each side of the staircase also led to darkness. I saw a beautiful young woman with pale skin and blood-red lips. She had long black hair and wore a long back dress that touched the floor. There was an air of malice about her, but like her house, there was something alluring about her. She drifted past, seeming to have only a vague awareness of me. Then she turned and made eye-contact momentarily. Her eyes burned into me and I sensed immense power within her.

Others were there too. There was a tall slow-moving man – a butler perhaps - and some servants. I remember having a conversation with the butler, but generally I was invisible to everyone and explored the mansion as I pleased.

I don’t remember anything else of what I saw in the house, but I do remember that I spied on the girl, and discovered she was a witch. I witnessed her practising black magic in a downstairs room. She performed some complicated rituals, and my understanding was that I was the target for them.

I soon noticed other things – vague things that I can’t remember - that made me realise that things were working against me in the house.

I was trapped in the building. There were no doors or windows to escape from. My exit method was quite bizarre - I started to feel an enormous force surging through my body. The energy built up inside me for a few seconds and then I flew straight through the roof, bursting through the floors like Superman!

The last thing I remember was looking down and seeing an amazing ariel view of house and the grounds from the sky as I flew back home.

Horror Dream Diary: The Cabin

I had this nightmare about 3 weeks after our cat, Arny, vanished in winter 2004. I dreamt that I was walking on a bleak, desolate wasteland where I happened upon a deserted wooden cabin.

Approaching the cabin, I could see that it was quite dilapidated, however it was clearly inhabited but the owner wasn’t around. The wind picked up slightly as I got closer, and the decaying building groaned in response.

I pressed my face against a window to try to see inside. It was dark, but I could make out some shabby furniture and a stone fireplace. The room was unkempt, and the atmosphere seemed stale - a film of dust covering everything, including the windows. Looking down, I saw that the back of a chair rested against the wall just below the window I was looking through, and a tartan blanket was neatly folded and draped over it.

My eyes gradually adjusted to the gloom and I noticed a pair of gleaming eyes staring up at me. It was Arny. He sprang onto the back of the chair and pressed a paw up against the window. His mouth opened as he cried in distress, but through the glass I heard nothing.

An inner voice begged me to get away from the cabin. There was an overwhelming negativity about the place and I knew I should not attempt to rescue him. Most importantly, I needed to get away before whoever lived there returned.

So I turned and walked away from Arny in the dream, and when I woke up the next morning I knew he was gone forever.

Horror dream diary: Dark World

In this dream I had the ability to look through reality into a dimension beyond – an bleak and desert-like parallel dimension. This alternative world was gradually breaking through into our reality and taking it over!

Occasionally I could see through walls where shapes moved in the dimension beyond. I once pressed my face into a wall and it became soft, moulding itself around me. As I pushed myself deeper into the wall, it stretched like rubber. I used my hands to stretch it thinly enough to become transparent, and looked through. Beyond stood grey, menacing figures, waiting.

Images would occassionally appear on walls as if projected from the other side. I found myself in a house standing in the doorway of an upstairs bedroom. The room was packed with people and they were all seated in rows of chairs facing a blank wall as if in a cinema. A sequence of images began to appear on the wall as I fumbled with my camera that refused to take a picture.

I glanced up and saw cryptic, pixelated images flashing on the wall in rapid succession. Jagged lettering that looked like a corruption of the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet pulsed on the wall. Colourful abstract arrays of patterns, some resembling a kind of bird (they looked a bit like chicken) also appeared. Lines of identical ones – repeated continuously. A random collection of computer-genearated images.

The pictures stopped and the room was dark and silent. Faces stared blankly at the wall. My scalp tingled and the air felt charged. I knew that something terrible was going to happen and I instantly dragged two people whom I knew from the room. On the landing I shook them from a trance-like state.

The bedroom wall began to glow brightly and the room was lit up intensely. Tendrils of brilliant white light snaked through the air from the wall and onto the heads of each person inside the room, as if burning into their minds. The room continued to blaze with energy for a few more seconds. I looked away as the light hurt my eyes. When the light faded the room was empty.

I went outside with the two people I’d rescued – a man and a woman. Together we broke into a vehicle and hot-wired it. We knew we had to get as far from the house as possible. As we pulled away I looked back at the house and in the upstairs window the faces of those had vanished stared grimly back at us.

Well, that was the only remarkable part of the dream - the rest of it was a good old fashioned industry-standard nightmare – a runaround romp where we were chased all over the place by these “converted” people. There were car chases, more car stealing, a sinister village, and an incident when I was hid from one of these guys in the roof space of a swimming pool changing room! What’s all that about? More and more people got “taken over”, and it got to the point when I was the only person in the world left who was normal.

Horror dream diary: DrGaz’s Final Resting Place.

My nightmares are generally rather macabre and I often remember them in quite some detail. This is an account of a recent dream where I visualised my own death. As disturbing as this may sound, for some reason in the dream it didn’t bother me too much. I don’t know why.

Music occasionally features prominently in my dreams. I often wake with a distinct melody in my head. This dream is no exception.

I dreamt that I was part of a brass band that was practising one evening in the streets of Cambridge. My instrument was the tuba, and our suited, bespectacled bandmaster was rehearsing us through a melody – two melodies in fact, both of them very similar with only minor variation between the two.

"My lungs would be the cause of my on death..."

As I played, the bandmaster walked angrily up to me and criticised what I was doing. He told me that I was playing the melody incorrectly and that I wasn’t blowing hard enough. Shaking his head he turned to another official and muttered something about my lungs being not up to the job. Between them they conceded that my lungs would be the cause of my own death, and this was not far off in the future. They resolved that now would be a good time to choose a burial plot for me. According to the band-master, Mrs Baxter, (whoever the hell Mrs Baxter was) had decreed that I was to be buried rather than cremated.

"I approved their choice of plot for my final resting place..."

We all trooped off together to the local graveyard where I approved their choice of plot for my final resting place. It was next to the main path and on a grassy incline.

At this moment in the dream my mind was filled with a vision of the future. I saw myself dead, lying in state in an open coffin, my suited-and-booted corpse looking not a day older than I am now. The coffin lay at floor level and was enveloped within a sealed ornate box with glass sides. The box was lavishly decorated with carved wooden framework and gold leaf.

I remember that in the dream I felt positive about what I saw. I even remember thinking that they’d done a pretty damn good job of me! The dream ended at this point, and I awoke with the tuba melody in my head. I have no idea what this all meant. Maybe I should lay off the fags.

Horror dream diary: The Interrupted Ritual

Last night I listened to some Robert Johnson, the legendary 1930s blues player. There are stories that Johnson sold his soul to the devil in return for his musical ability. I recently also saw a movie called “Skeleton Key”. This is about two black servants at a plantation house in Louisiana who used a form of ritual witchcraft called “Hoodoo”. I guess the combination of both of these things must have ticked a couple of boxes in my subconscious, resulting in this latest instalment of my Horror Dream Diary…

Interestingly, in the dream I wasn’t me. Instead I saw events through the eyes of Robert Johnson’s wife!

I was in our house (in the Mississippi Delta probably) one afternoon and I thought that I was alone in the house. I went downstairs into the living room, where Johnson’s guitar lay resting on a sofa, and saw that furniture had been moved from the wall revealing a door that I didn’t know about. Standing in front of it I could smell incense and hear the sound of chanting coming from behind the door.

"At Johnson’s feet were a human skull and complete spinal column."

I opened the door and inside Johnson stood rigid, his eyes fixed in a stare and he appeared to be having a fit. The room glowed with candlelight. At Johnson’s feet were a human skull and complete spinal column. They glistened with the remains of recently removed flesh.

I screamed and he came out of his trance. I ran for the front door, but he stopped me. Calming me down, he reassured me that everything was fine. I believed what he said and trusted him. We went back into the living room where he explained everything, telling me that only good will come from the rituals he secretly performed.

Immediately two men forcibly entered the house and blocked our exit from the living room. They were black and wore dark suits. One carried a black leather holdall. Both stood there grim-faced.

“You have seen the face of Azazliel, and have interrupted his coming” said one. He then went on to say that that a ritual was needed to correct things, and that there were to be consequences for us.

"He sliced the dog open from throat to anus..."

In the dream we had a pet dog (a Jack Russell terrier) and they used rope that they tied to its legs to suspend it from the ceiling rafters, so that it was belly-up and at waist height. One man opened the black holdall and I could see that it contained shiny surgical instruments. He sliced the dog open from throat to anus, and removed and discarded some internal organs. The next thing he did was really strange; he took out a syringe and began to inject small amounts of fluid into various points within the dog. I asked him was he was doing and he explained that he was injecting a substance that would cause the dog to have cancer.

One man then announced that the dog was still alive and would be sewn back together shortly, but before this he told me that one more thing was still needed to complete the ritual.

All eyes were firmly fixed on me as he announced that they needed a human heart to transplant into the dog. I was held firmly from behind as he removed a large knife from his bag.

I struggled and was pushed face down onto a table. They were going to cut my heart out through my back. As the sharp tip of the blade touched my back to make the first incision I jolted awake. It was 4:30am.

I have to go to see the dentist today, so maybe this dream was partly caused my squeamishness about surgery!

Horror dream diary: The Labyrinth

This is my account of a disturbing dream I had last night…

I was walking though dark London streets trying to find my way home. I didn’t know where home was or where I had been. I was dragging a large, wheeled suitcase and over my shoulder was a large bag containing my laptop.

Somehow I found myself within a labyrinth of dark, claustrophobic underground tunnels. They had a Victorian feel and wooden doorways and trap doors in the walls and floors led in hundreds of different directions. Gas lamps mounted on the walls flickered in the gloom.

Now and then a flurry of pale figures would dart past me, around me, hurtling through one door and into another, disappearing down different corridors. These diminutive, naked human forms scuttled on their way indifferent to me, an intruder.

I was soon alone, wheeling my suitcase along, trying to decide which door I should choose. Some slammed themselves open as I walked past, as if trying to entice me along a certain route – the same, brightly lit well-trodden paths that the others had taken. I was determined to find my own way and this meant that I had feel my way down sections of corridor that were in total darkness.

As I progressed deeper into the labyrinth, more doors would hurl themselves open for me, trying to force me to deviate from my path, and the further I went, the more violently they flung themselves open. It was as if they were trying to make me lose confidence in the route I was taking and force me to change my mind.

In a particularly dark and remote section of tunnels, I came upon a rectangular opening in the floor. It was partially obscured by a stack of books, but through a narrow slit I could see that there was a brightly lit room beneath and a figure was moving around within.

This is when things started to get seriously weird.

A hand burst through the opening and clawed at me, snatching at my ankles. My eyes somehow magnified the hand as if I was seeing it through a fish-eye lens. Distorted fingers thrashed for a few moments before giving up and withdrawing.

I walked on until I came to a locked door. I knocked and the door was thrown open by a middle aged rat-like gentleman dressed in a tired black suit and wearing a crumpled top hat. He invited me into his room. The floor was strewn with electronic equipment and piles of old clothes and books. In the corner a crude wooden staircase led up to the black void of an attic room above.

A blonde girl in her mid-twenties accompanied the man. She was dressed in a green and red frock.

At this point I realised that the bag I carried on my shoulder was empty. My laptop had vanished.

The atmosphere in the room was welcoming and I exchanged pleasantries with the unusual couple, joking with them that their appearance reminded me of characters from “Alice in Wonderland”, making particular reference to the man’s top hat. The man soon announced that he had to attend to some business elsewhere, and he left through the door that I had previously entered. I was alone with the girl who confided in me that her acquaintance was not the friendly person he appeared to be. He was a liar and he was evil. He was the one that had taken my computer, and he was setting a trap for me.

The girl led me up the stairs to the attic room where we searched for the laptop. We found it concealed under piles of rags. I retrieved it and as we climbed down to the lower room I heard footsteps echoing in the corridor outside as the man returned. I hurried down the last few steps and hid my laptop away underneath a bundle of clothes. The door was flung open and he entered, his eyes glaring with suspicion. The laptop was poorly concealed under the clothes, and I knew it wouldn’t be long before he saw it. I attempted to distract him by examining one of his electronic gadgets, asking him to explain its function to me.

I awoke exactly at this moment, and whoa... what a weird dream. What was the meaning of this dream? What would have happened next?

Any suggestions? Please leave a comment. I’m not on drugs or anything.
